Toxicity of Ammonium Dichromate

All this discussion of ammonium dichromate has got me wondering
-- will this stuff kill my septic tank? What happens to it when it gets
out into the environment. Seems like it's sufficiently reactive that it
would come apart and find other, less volatile ways of living in soil.
Or is the chromium the problem?
