I tried doing this via the prefab units many years ago
and remember taking the outer housing off the units to
allow me to get them closer together.
For some reason (this is in the days b4 the internet
and this list serve where i could ask a lot of people
for answers) the units didn't power the bulbs well so
I ended up having a buddy help me build a unit using
the 48" bulbs.
One other item not mentioned is the starters which may
or may not be necessary if modern ballasts don't
require them...my old ones do.
Also, having a timer on this set up, which ever way u
go, may not be the hot ticket as it takes a while for
the tubes to power up. I just leave mine on
continuously while in a session which also helps keep
the darkroom warmer in the winter. =)
