It's that time again. We intentionally leak this information to select
audiences first.
Both APIS 99 and APIS 2001 have been sellouts so register early. We have
moved to more comfortable quarters at the Santa Fe Convention Center. APIS
is held in conjunction with PhotoArts Santa Fe:
http://www.photoartssantafe.com/
so there will be plenty of lectures and shows to see.
The program so far -- always subject to change of course!
Stuart Melvin will do an update on his phenomenal new gum process.(You have
to see them to believe them!)
Dick Arentz will do a session on his latest discoveries in platinum
printing. (A legend in his own time!)
Luther Gerlach will be doing a session on Ambrotype. (Amazing work!)
Zoe Zimmerman will do a session on Albumin.(Zoe is one of the foremost
workers in the process and hails from our northern neighbor, Taos)
Gordon Mark on super large format portraits. (Gordon is the designer and
builder of the Hobo with some other surprises in the works.)
David Hoptman on SolarPlate.(Be a "real" printmaker. Just joking!)
Russell Young will do a session on soft focus lenses. (Russ is up there
with the future King William. Russell is doing his PhD at Saint Andrews
College, Scotland, on soft focus lenses. Russ will repeat and expand his
stunning APIS 2002 presentation at Bradford England)
I will do a session on carbon printing and discuss my commercial production
of carbon tissue project.
Several more are in the works.
These are not hands on teaching session but presentations. The purpose is
to familiarize the beginner and to expand the advanced workers horizons. By
popular demand here is bit more slack in the program to allow more time for
networking and sharing or portfolios.

The following is the web site description:
Alternative Photographic International Symposium
Thursday July 17 through Saturday July 19, 2003.
at the Sweeney Convention Center in Santa Fe, NM
just a few blocks from the historic downtown Santa Fe Plaza
APIS is probably the world's largest gathering of photographers
specializing in alternative and hand coated processes and related
techniques. Anyone interested in fine art photography with a handcrafted
approach is encouraged to attend. Sponsored by Bostick & Sullivan
biannually in the USA since 1999, APIS usually attracts around 150+ photo
professionals, students, dilettantes and those curious about
non-traditional photographic techniques.
The idea behind APIS is to present educational and informative seminars on
a variety of topics, and to provide a forum for networking and socializing
among the diverse community of alternative photography enthusiasts.
The fee for this year's APIS is US$200.00 for all three days of events.
Attendees are responsible for meals and lodging. Fortunately, Santa Fe has
much to offer. Try to book hotels well in advance as the summer tourist
season can be very busy. Click here to visit the Santa Fe visitors'
information site. There are a wide variety of available accommodations,
from 5 star hotels to national forest campsites, something for everyone and
their budget.
Tentative schedule:
Thursday:
Check-in: pick up registration packets.
5 prints in 5 minutes: informal opportunity for participants to show work,
talk about it, and answer questions.
Opening Reception: snacks, drinks and welcoming.
Print exchange: This is really fun. Bring a print. All prints are wrapped
in brown paper, random numbers are chosen, everyone gets a print.
Discuss and/or trade, if desired. This was a big hit at previous APIS's.
Friday:
Morning Session: several speakers and presentations.
Lunch: Everyone is on their own to explore Santa Fe.
Afternoon Session: more presentations.
Saturday:
Morning Session: more speakers
Lunch: same as Friday.
Goodbye
Ongoing: The print sharing room is available all day (near the
morning and afternoon sessions) for portfolio exhibitions,
socializing, heated debates, etc.
Other events of interest:
PhotoArts Santa Fe 2003: July11-20, a 10 day festival celebrating the
diverse photo culture of Santa Fe and New Mexico, APIS is a PhotoArts event.
Big camera day: July 20th, the closing event of PhotoArts 2003 and the day
after APIS. Bring your large format camera and hang out. See Thomas
Mezzanotte's Camera Obscura Tent.
more events to be added.
