I'll take a guess at this.
There is a large shelf fungus called "Artist's Conch" (Ganoderma applanatum) that grows on dead trees. The underside spore surface of the fungus is hard and flat and can be scrathed with sharp tools to reveal a darker color. There are a number of artists who draw on this surface in this way, making very unique pictures (not photos of course).
Could this be it?

Subject: printing with mold or fungus?
>
> Hi all, I was talking with someone last night who was talking with someone
else who has a partner making prints with mold or fungus or something like
that. The person I talked to, who isn't a photographer, didn't delve in to
it with the person they were talking too so they didn't get the process
details.
Has anyone heard of this and what could this person possibly be doing?
Thanks,
Chris
