Andrew,

I forgot to respond to one aspect of your basic question. The reason an
Epson that has a highest dpi of 1440 cannot give you the best print when the
file is set at 720 ppi (unless perhaps in the case of line art with very fine
lines) is that the printer needs a certain number of it's DOTS to render a
PIXEL. If you think about it, then when you set your image to 720 ppi
(Pixels Per Inch) and the printer is running at 1440 dpi (Dots Per Inch),
then the printer only has 4 dots (2x2) with which to render the tones of your
pixel. However, if your image is at 360 ppi, then your printer has 16 Dots
(4x4) to render each pixel—which will give you much better tones.
