I would second Peter's comment, Vuescan is good software to use for the
following reasons
Can be used with a wide range of scanners on the market
Offers good features for the price
Provides good solid scans without much hassle
I use it for B/W negs scans with good results, though I would suggest that
you trust the default settings most of the time (they work well) and adjust
in photoshop.
The hamrick site also offer some good links for advice on scanning tips.
