I assume you are asking about Japanned lacquer because you have read that
the plates were japanned? Actually this was a term ( if I remember
correctly ) that referred to any black shinny finish, like lacquered boxes
from Japan. In reality this is a baked on coating of asphalt.

There is for certain a few folks supplying these plate and they are on that
forum. Maybe you can find the supplier by doing a search for tintype or
Japanned plates. The subject was discussed as late as last month.
