Sure, first I'm using the Becquerel method of making daguerreotypes that
doesn't involve mercury or bromine. The lack of fuming bromine might (I don'
t know since I've never tried the mercury/bromine method) make the plate a
little more durable to place the transparency on it. The reality is I have
no doubt that I'm probably putting tiny fine scratches on the fumed plate
when I put the transparency on it. At the same time I don't mind this since
my plates are not pristine to begin with unlike some people who do this
process. I like seeing the marks in my images and the scratches and rub
marks are part of the compositions I'm doing.

So I'm not going to go step by step in making a plate ready to be exposed.
You can read about that on www.newdags.com. When I have a plate ready for
exposure, I take a color transparency and place it on the plate in a contact
printer. Then I'm using a 500watt blue tinted photoflood bulb about two feet
above the printing frame and exposing for about 15-20 seconds. The effect is
not perfect and there is much I can do to control and maybe make better
images, but an image does show up after development. When I get back to
tweaking this process I'm going play with changing the light source and
height at which the bulb is in relation to the contact frame to see if I get
better "printing" control. The reason I use color transparency is that I
want to see the translation of colors in to the UV only seeing dag. I guess
anything could be used. In fact I'm going to soon be trying B&W negatives to
see how that translates on to the plate. I'm wondering if the reverse will
happen with the dag plate in that when you look at it from the side, the
image will be in positive.

If you want to see example of using transparencies to make dags, my work can
be seen here: www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/c/clovenguth/

Hi Chris. You got my attention when you said you make Dags from
transparencies. Without giving away any trade secrets, could you give us a
run-down of that process? I've not heard of it before. Thanks. Arthur
