Re: Frozen Gum ArabicHi Jack,
Thanks for the information about the gum and the dichromate. Only having printed with gum once, about six years ago, I wasn't sure if freezing would effect it. I had planned to make some prints but, due to my lack of experience with gum, I wasn't sure that I would be able to tell if something was slightly wrong.

Scott,
My gum has frozen dozens of times with no effect. There is a lot of folklore that may have scientific basis but is of no reasonalbe effect. I have used the same Ammonium Dichromate crystals since the sixties with no deterioration evedent. I only recently finished off a bottle of am-dicromate solution that was stored in a clear bottle for ten years or so. Making a new solution showed no change in print sensitivity. But the books warn you to keep the solution in brown bottles and caution about it going "bad". I love the way Americans think of things as "good " and "bad". We must watch out for bad soutions. Lately there is much talk here (Bloomington IN) about "BAD" trees. A whole park was bulldozed so they could start over with "GOOD" trees. Enjoy your gum. Not to worry!

Subject: Frozen Gum Arabic
Hi all,
After years of deliberating, I finally decided to take the plunge and try gum printing and gum-overs.
Does freezing gum arabic have any undesirable effects?
I just received shipment via UPS ground and it arrived frozen solid as a block of ice. It must have been that way for about a week since it went from the west coast to the east coast. After thawing, it seems ok in texture and consistency from what I can remember; but I am concerned whether it freezing will cause problems with gum printing or gum-overs.
Cheers,
Scott Wainer
