I go back and forth on this stuff.

We all know that manufacturing these cartridges costs about $3.00 for
Epson. Yet we are charged $25.00-$30.00 per unit. Seems like highway
robbery. Then again, the cost of the printers are very reasonable. I
suppose the business model is to give away the printers and make money
on the back-end. It's sort of "pay as you go". I guess they could hike
the cost of the hardware and then bring down the cartridge price. Every
time I go to buy new ink (yesterday in fact) I'm amazed and dismayed at
the cost. But then I crank out a Super-B print and realize what it used
to cost to get output of this quality ($50.00 or more per print) and
feel like I've got a good deal.

Bottom line - does Epson provide value for the money? I think we've all
got to say yes at some level. Would any of us want to go back to the
Cibachrome or C-Print days? Not me.

Don't be too sure!It makes no business sense for Epson to do that. It's
a little like the butcher weighing his thumb on the scale with the
hamburger - 19th Century stuff! Joachim

Dear List,
This week the dutch consumers' organization 'CONSUMENTENBOND' gives an
advice to all her customers not to buy Epson printers anymore; they
detected a chip used by Epson which indicates that the cartridges were
to be replaced but the cartridges were not empty at all!! It seems to be
that this chip will force the user to replace non-empty cartridges. It
sounds unbelievable, but before a consumers organization comes out with
such an advice, one can be sure there is really something wrong! cheers,
Henk
