I asked a friend who is a PhD chemist (of explosives no less) and this is
what he said:

"I think chromates are ok if you look at the data sheets autoignition
doesn't begin until close to 200c which isn't going to happen in a car
unless they use a magnifying glass in the sun... It's the chlorates &
perchlorates that go bang in the night more than the chromates. As the IRA
[Irish Republican Army] will tell you. I don't understand (have never looked
into) the chemistry of photography, except that it involves silver along the
way."
