No argument here that imagesetter negs are less fun and break your
creative flow (send off file and...wait for neg) but they needn't be a
pain if you find a good service bureau.

Copy Graphics in Santa Fe is making very good negs for photographers. If
you've prepared your image properly (correct contrast curve, no
artifacts, etc.) they'll give you a good neg.

There is a terrific show of toned silver gelatin prints at the Nimitz
Museum in Fredericksburg, TX. Photographer Dudley Harris photographed
with 4x5, medium format, 35mm and Nikon D1X and had Copy Graphics make
16x20 imagesetter negs that he contact printed. Dudley was able to print,
process, tone and wash 27 large prints in ONE MORNING because every
imagesetter neg printed with the exact same time and didn't need any
burning or dodging. He'd done all the image control in Photoshop and his
big negs captured that work faithfully. He was thrilled and his prints
are a joy to see.

You can FTP your files to them (FTP is a sister to email attachments) and
have the negs back the next day via FedEx. Peter Ellzey is very sharp on
technical issues and eager to help fine-art photographers with their
negative issues. And, no, I don't get a kickback from them. ;^)
