Mary - I would say there's not a quality advantage in using "raw" pigment.
The gain is really in satisfaction - removing yet another "factory" stage
from the printing process. We had an exchange on the list not long ago from
folk who are actually digging up their own "earth" pigments from appropriate
spots on the globe. Since I don't live near Siena (or wherever) I'm happy to
go to a supplier (Cornelissen in London, or a fabulous little shop I found
on a visit to Venice) so I now have a small collection of raw pigments,
including things like Herculaneum Red, as found on the walls in Pompeii.
They're on the shelf, but I'm only just getting round to using them for gum
printing - hence the question about mixing!
