I wonder if this was similar to the "Brownline" or "Silver Print" papers available for
proofing print jobs? These looked to me like precoated Vandyke papers, were very
cheap, and the processing procedure was identical to that of Vandyke. Unfortunately
they have disappeared along with a lot of traditional printing supplies.
