Other lists I belong to put a title in the subject line. I
think this is helpful mainly to those who are not good at
configuring filters in their mail readers, or who use
readers without filters.
Most mail clients have filters which will identify
messages from the "from" or some other line in the header.
Putting the list name in the subject line allows simple
filtering by looking at the subject field. For instance, the
Rolleiflex Users List puts (Rollei) in the subject line. My
filter is set to look for this including the brackets.
This groups is filtered by using the "To" field.
Generally, something can be found which gives reliable
filtering.
My point is that while its possible to put an identifier
in the subject line its not necessary for most mail programs
with filters.

I've not found anything which blocks spam effectively
except for repeated spams from senders who use the same
server each time. Much of the spam I receive comes from
spoofed sources so there is little repitition. Some ISP's
allow blocking of messages directly at the mail server.
Netcom does not offer this so I filter for automatic
deletion when I can. Otherwise I preview messages I am not
sure of before deleting.
Anything in Korean or Chinese "Big-5" languages get
deleted right away. I have no idea why I get this stuff.
