Dear southerner,

If you're looking for alt photo, you'd better head west not north ! New
York, for all its wonderfulness, is NOT an alt town. In fact, if you
browse the t-shirt shops you'll see one that says "welcome to New York,
now go home!" with a picture of a gun barrel facing. You may not see that
so much any more, since austerity hit & we're desperate for tourists, but
the one right next to it (at least in my mind) is "New York, New York: NOT
an alt town."

That said however, go to Photography in New York which is online, and
check John Stevenson, Howard Greenberg and Robert Mann Galleries, which
may have something (I don't have May calendar) --but to repeat myself, I
think time in New York is generally wasted seeking alt (another reason why
last month's carbon prints were such a kick).

Better to just go to the Metropolitan Museum, climb the main central
stairway and turn left at the top. This is the corridor leading to the
print galleries, which often have an interesting exhibit themselves, but
along the way are changing exhibitions of photographs from the collection
from late 19th to late 20th century with always at least a few gems.

But, obviously, the Metropolitan is full of marvels, right now 2000 year
old sculpture from Iraq & environs. My favorite galleries are Egyptian,
Persian, Indian, and Japanese -- fabulous collections & far from the
crowds, nearly deserted, in fact.

For lunch there's a nice cafeteria on the other side of the Greek & Roman
sculpture -- enjoy a sarcophagus and some pretty fair food.

Judy
