I thought someone else would have spotted this, but maybe Friday Times
isn't big with photographers... During the Sally Mann discussion, someone
(snidely) declared that her recent work had not been well received.. . I
don't know where he got this, but thought it worth mentioning that (in
ADDITION to many serious & admiring reviews for her landscapes in recent
years) she got a rave as the lead art review in last Friday's N Y Times.
(The Times does its art reviews on Friday. The Sunday Times is reserved
for commentary & longer articles.)
The reviewer is senior writer Grace Glueck, a savvy old timer & one of the
few willing to say something is terrible, which she does with some wit and
edge. She calls this "a powerfully elogent show," and gives it a
generally rave review, with such terms as "beautiful," "daring," et al.
She also, more's the miracle, seems to have some idea what the collodion
process is about, unlike most reviewers in this or other publications.
Then the Times Sunday art section had (what I found) a fascinating article
about Annie Liebowitz's portraits -- not at all a rave, tho full of
interest and fact. (And I mention merely in passing that Liebowitz is in
VERY bad odor in my neighborhood because the contractor of a house she was
renovating did some bad stuff and damaged the neighboring small old house
-- federal, if memory serves-- so badly the family had to move out &
there's some question of whether it can be rescued... conspiracy theories
flourish, that the damage was deliberate so L. could get the land, among
others.)
Also, the Sunday art section had a nice reflection on Julia Margaret
Cameron as photographer of celebrities... the "news hook" being Annie
Lebowitz's celebrity portraits.
