Hello All,
When I've mentioned this before, I've added the caveat that it was some
years ago, and that for all I know, things may have changed since then;
no doubt I should have added that caveat again this time. For one thing,
it seems that fewer paper manufacturers are using gelatin for sizing
than were at that time, and what with the apparent changes in Arches
paper over time, it's possible that they have changed their gel-sizing
methods as well, although it's still described the same in the Daniel
Smith catalog. The Arches bright white, by the way, is described in the
Daniel Smith catalog as "heavily sized" but doesn't say what the sizing
is; the paper surface reminds me in many respects of Arches Platine,
which I believe is surface-sized with something other than gelatin.

This morning I've been asked privately to produce detailed information
about these conversations, who I talked to and whether I kept a written
record of the conversations and so forth. As I said, it was years ago,
and I certainly don't remember who I talked to, although I do remember
that I got something of a runaround before I found my way to the right
person to talk to about Arches. I certainly didn't keep a written record
of the conversations, nor would it have occurred to me that I would need
to. I was only interested in the information for my own personal
consideration, and I've only shared it here as something I found out
some time ago that I thought would be interesting to folks. Anyone is
welcome of course to do their own investigation; if the information I
was given was incorrect it would be useful to know that, although I
can't imagine why paper manufacturers would lie to me about this. You'd
think that if they were going to lie about it, they would lie in the
other direction. I can't think of any reason it would be to their
advantage to tell me that they don't harden the gelatin, if they do.
