List members may be wish to see the RPS Historical Group programme for
2004/5.
The programme includes many items that will be of interest to those whose
field is alternative processes, including the-
ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM in September which is to be
held in Dunfermline near Edinburgh.
The Historical Group is widening its horizons both in terms of subject matter
and where it meets.Proceedings of its meetings are published in the
PhotoHistorian in which an appearance qualifies as 'publication' for academic
purposes.The PhotoHistorian welcomes other submissions. Copies of the special double
edition of The PhotoHistorian covering APIS 2002 are available from
ajwarr@aol.com in magazine form or as a CD.
Our programme for 2004 follows. Please note that the events in September,
October and November are still at the planning stage.Anyone who wishes to
present a paper or show work in progress at the Muybridge conference or the
Alternative Processes Internatiuonal Symposium (APIS) should reply to this e mail.
APIS is held in alternative years in the UK and the US. The intention is to
orientate the UK Symposium more to the art and history of photography.

Albert Thomas Watson Penn : Pioneering Photographer of India.
Christopher Penn will be talking about the life and work of his great
grandfather. His landscape photographs of the Nilgiri mountain range, belong to the
great photographs of the era. His ethnographic portraits of Toda and Karumba
people are of similar significance. These photographs featured in the memorable
opening exhibition, 'India Through the lens 1840 to 1911' at the new
Gallery at the School of African and Oriental Studies in Bloomsbury in 2001. This
exhibition was also shown in Washington in 2000 and at th Commonwealth Museum in
Bristol in 2002. Watson Penn's work can also be found in the collections
including those of the Royal Commonwealth Society and the India Office collection
at the British Museum .

At the Museum and Galleries at Norwich Castle and at Sainsbury Centre,
University of East Anglia and the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library.
Meet at the central hall of the Museum at 10 AM (the programme will finish at
4PM).

Conducted tours of the exhibition of early photography in Norwich 'A Period
Eye' and 'Machu Pichu and the Camera' with talks by John Benjafield, ( who is a
dealer in prints), on 19th century photography in Norwich and Clive Wilkins
Jenkins on Walter Clutterbuck.
Sunday 28 March
At Bewl Water south of Tunbridge Wells off the A21.There will be a map with
instructions. This meeting is held in conjunction with the SE Region and the
Pictorial Group of the Royal Photographic Society.

Meet at 9.30 AM for registration at the Visitor Centre.
The Rise and Decline of the Pictorial Movement and its current revival. Dr
Carolyn Bloore and Terry King.
There will then be practical demonstrations of Niepce's heliographic process
from the 1820s with a demonstration by Roy Hungerford.
Derek Reay, the Chairman of the Pictorial Group of the RPS will talk on the
Tyng collection of Pictorial prints now in the RPS collection at Bradford and
the future of the collection including acquisitions policy.
Richard Morris will take a calotype of the group and explain the background
to the first negative positive photographic process with reference to
photographs of Talbot and Hill and Adamson.
The day will finish with a discussion on what has constituted a pictorial
photograph. Those attending are encouraged to bring prints for discussion.

A special visit to the RPS and Science Museum collections at the National
Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Bradford. Brian Liddy will be the
host.

Alternative Processes International Symposium 2004, the intenion is to hold
the 2004 and the 2006 conferences in Scotland.
This will be a thee day conference. Items will include:
Presentations of their own work by those attending the conference.
Special visits to matters of early photographic interest in St Andrews and
Edinburgh
A presentation by Dusan Stulik from the Getty Conservation Institute on 'The
First Photograph' and the work of the institute.
Latest developments in the making of Chrysotypes.
The aesthetics of platinum printing since the 1870s
The prints of the Annans including carbon and the pioneering work with Karl
Klic on photogravure.
Carbon printing.
Digital Negatives for alternative processes
and more.
October
A special weekend at Dimbola Lodge, Julia Margaret Cameron's home on the
Isle of Wight. The weekend will include re-enactments of JMC's wet collodion
photography and albumen printing and talks and dramatic presentations. The work of
Lewis Carroll, George Frederick Watts and phrenology will also be covered.
The cost, including accommodation and meals is likely to be of the order of
one hundred pounds.
The date and other details will be confirmed soon. Numbers will be limited
to 40 except for a public showing of the dramatic presentation.
November 6 & 7
Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames
The Historical Group will be collaborating on
a special conference to commemorate the centenary of the death of
Muybridge. The commemoration will include exhibitions, drama and re-enactments as well
as the conference . The re-enactment will have twenty-four 10x8 cameras in a
row which will take place earlier in the year and filmed for the conference.
December 15
Christmas party in Richmond.
There will also be special conferences at weekends in Swansea,Whitby and
again at Dimbola in 2005.
