part of the problem is the need to incorporate color depth as well.
a 5 x 7 inch, 300 dpi scan equates to 3,150,000 total pixels.
if it is 24-bit color:
3,150,000 * 24 = 75,600,000
and then, as there are 8 bits in a 'byte': 75,600,000 divided by 8:
= 9,450,000 or about 9.4 megabytes.
