Aspirin is acetylated form of salicylic acid and they are different
compounds. It's just that aspirin is converted to salicylic acid in
the body so they work the same. However, aspirin is used for most
applications (except topical application to skin, etc.) because
salicylic acid is an irritant, while aspirin is not.
