Because Rothko typically made up his own paints and treatments, they often
behaved unpredictably on different surfaces in different conditions. A good
example is the Houston Chapel (which opened in 1971, a year after Rothko's
suicide.) A filmy white substance rose to the surface of the plum and blck
paintings in the high humidity. Conservators have been working on the chapel since,
and Carol Mancusi-Ungaro has been writing and speaking about the project
recently.
