I used to have a roommate in Oregon who was a
furniture artist. The man did absolutely bizarre
whacked out cartoonish stuff that was remarkably
functional. This is an understatement, the man's
carpentry work was beautiful and damn near
flawless....slides that flowed like water. I had a
discussion with him about the cost of art, hence the
school of "what is" and "what isn't" art. Our
agreement was that art has no cost other than the
creator's time and materials...anything else is
completely removed and has no bearing on the reality
of the piece. I revisit a wonderful show on the BBC
called "Faking It". watch when you get a chance, the
art world is f'd...I'm about to go out tomorrow and
drop $1200 on an Arca Swiss 5x7 for the sole purpose
of having big negs for big prints and quality
materials to do contact printing with...if I ever have
a show, I'll be the first person to kick my own
ass...screw the rest of the world, I'm doing this for me.
