Gum print formaline

Hi everybody i am prepering for a course in gum printing and i am thinking
of if there is anything else than formaline that you can use for holding the
gum solution fresh.
I also use formaline after sizing the papers just 125 ml to 5 liter of water
,it is for the hardening.

Can i use something else, less toxic?
