Thanks again for your comments on my images.
Yes, exposing the shadows is the main problem (and hence the name of my website). Basically, we can use the in-camera techniques of exposure control: aperture, film speed & time. I do these things but mostly rely upon: film choice with low reciprocity failure and compensating developer (PMK derivatives) and conditions.
Oh yes, I also cheat by using light sources (for under trees, etc.)
