I think the offending type of splash page is one that
has a meg or 2 of graphics that take time to load no
matter what your connection speed...well ok maybe a T1
won't have to wait. But even for us dsl/cable folks,
if one waits for this graphic of some silly logo they
paid-to-much-to-have-designed to load just to click
"enter" they aren't respecting our time.

A single photo representing the content and links
directly to that content is best IMO. I mean, one has
to start somewhere yet one shouldn't throw the viewer
into the midst of a gallery either without an
introduction of some kind. Giving the viewer a choice
as to the content they want to see is shouldn't offend
anyone.

Then of course there are the sites that are there for
their own sake and are embellished by the content.
These are the ones with audio, flash, shockwave,
etcetc, that create an environment to view their work.
This isn't acceptable to those w/slower connections
but for those with time and those who might just
bookmark and come back later to explore, it's fine.
Those sites are about exploration!

Audio can be intrusive so I look for the "sound off"
button if my ears are offended. If there isn't one,
I'm annoyed, but I get over it fast cause I have a
mute button on my keyboard.

The authors of that critical web site qualified his
remarks at the bottom of the page under "Artistic
Sites May Differ From Useful Sites" so you have free
reign somewhat to do as you please because your work
is there to be explored. Part of my own site is that
way in the "fine art" section since I figured I can do
as I please there. So if only those folks REALLY
interested in my work find the link in the bellybutton
of one of the images, so be it. Those that don't miss
out and might not like the content anyway. I did it
for fun and 'cause I could.

I found Darryl's comments on "functional expectations"
interesting as well. I admit it. I thought those
sites were "sublime" too. =)
