Loris and Terry,
Thanks. My FAC is from Photographer's Formulary rather than B&S. I'm
relieved to know someone else gets a precipitate since it is NEVER
mentioned. The first batch I used tap water and thought that was the cause.
The second batch I used distilled so I thought I had added the silver
nitrate too quickly. The third batch was where I noticed the sudden onset
of the precipitate. The fourth which I'm currently using had very little
because I stopped adding the silver nitrate solution.
I don't have Keepers of the Light, but a check of half a dozen sources
turns up a pretty consistent set of figures. The FAC is always 9 g in a
total of 100 ml finished solutions. The tartaric acid is always 1.5 g. The
silver nitrate is often 3.8 g, often 4 g. From my experience the 3.8 might
be a better figure--I'll measure the volumn of solution I use very carefully
next time.
