It's not Kallitype. It's a Vandyke variation. The sensitizer is same as Vandyke (green Ammonium Iron(III) Citrate) but the acid is different (Oxalic Acid, whereas Vandyke formula incorporates Tartaric Acid)... Kallitype sensitizer is Iron(III) Oxalate and it's a true DOP process.
A 21 or 31-step wedge is very helpful in knowing your process. You can easily determine a standart printing time, you can easily determine the density range needed for a particular emulsion, you can use it to compare different emulsions (in terms of speed, contrast), or to learn the effects of a specific toner (comparing the results of a toned and untoned print - in a more scientific, objective manner)... and whatnot.
I think the $5 21-step Stouffer transmission tablet is more than enough for the purposes listed above. I prefer to use Mark's 31-step tablet because you can determine standart printing time a little bit more sensitively and also it's bigger (especially wider) compared to the 21-step tablet.
Regards,
Loris.

Hi Loris,
I don't have the Jame's book handy right now- it is in the darkroom- but; is the 'brownprint' called ?"Kallitype"...
I am interested in knowing as I bought the kit over the 'phone' from the Formulary and will try it out when it gets here in one month.
BTW; does one need a 21 step wedge for alternative processes and how does one use it?
I went into the store yesterday and found out the Kodak step wedge costs $144. US and the Stouffer wedge costs $5.80 US- a big difference in price, any difference in quality?
Thanks so much,
Susan
