I'll chime with a different view here. The pure pigment I recently tested
(Scmincke Graphite) actually stains more with sized paper (2%, hardened w/
formalin). What would be your explanation for this? Could it be I did
something wrong in the sizing step? See what I did below:

- Prepared a 2% gelatine solution (200 Bloom, 15 mins. soak, then heated to
50C and stirred)
- Brushed the solution to a paper evenly, I even made few passes with a
glass coating rod
- Dried the paper
- Hardened (outside) with a formalin solution (15cc to 1.5lt water) time:
2mins (*)

I'm suspecting I did something wrong in the hardening step - could it be
that the formalin solution was weak and/or the hardening bath durating was
too short?

BTW, the sized paper is harder and more shiny compared to unsized paper...

TIA,
Loris.

Hi Matt,
Staining is only an issue if you donÕt size your paper. I had great success
with Daniel Smith and Maimeri blu watercolors, although anything should
give you an image in gum. I also prefer transparent pigments.
