Plate glass and float glass differ in the way sheets are made. Plate
glass is more precise but it requires much more work and produces more
waste. In my experience, good float glass is perfectly usable for
large format dry plate applications with not a high degree of
magnification.

Plates I've seen/read/haeard of for 5x7 to 8x10 range is either 1.5mm
or 1.6mm and I don't think 1.4mm was commonly used for these
sizes. Some smaller plates used thinner (than 1.4mm) glass, though.
