As Chris implies, actually meeting people increases a sense of community.
That is why we started APIS ten years ago.

But rather than this resulting in a community of people of like mind getting
together to discuss things, the unpleasant side of competition reared its
head. I am afraid that this still shows on this list in attacks on people with a
proven reputation through writing and performance in the field, when they
join or rejoin the list. After these attacks these people leave. That is one
reason why very few people answer questions. This has resulted in a lowering of
the standard of debate.

There are a large number of people out there who are practising alternative
processes. Unfortunately, they often tell me that they do not find the
exchanges on this list particularly helpful as they appear to be more concerned with
the minutiae of process rather than the use of process to make pictures.

APIS is still running . This year we are holding APIS at Oxford University in
September with the support of the University authorities. We are combining it
with the second year of the successful conference we held in Oxford last
year, 'The Object Glass of Science', where we had very useful presentations on how
science has served the art of photography. If anyone is interested in coming
to APIS this year, to be held at an Oxford College and in the Museum of the
History of Science , I will send them more details. We would also be grateful
for anyone who may like to provide administrative support. There will be
demonstrations and portfolio sessions as well as presentations by those of proven
ability and representatives of major institutions.

APIS 2008 is likely to be held in Bratislava in the Czech Republic. That is
just the European side of things.

APIS in the US is ably and successfully run by Melody and Dick Sullivan. A
nyone who has been to their APIS meetings in the 'odd' years in Santa Fe knows
how friendly and useful these metings are.

As Chris says, meeting people establishes identity.

To the person who doubts my 'identity', I am real, I am a subscriber to this
list, ( Have look at www.hands-on-pictures.com) .
