in this case the horses' name was Henkel. The information comes from the
technical date for the product which does consist of polyvinyl alcohol. a
preservative and a plasticiser plus a colorant. Golden or corn syrup would probably
work well as a plasticiser That the plasticise is subject to bacterial attack
would explain the need for a preservative.The plasticiser is needed to maintain
solubility and flexibility. At least that is how I interpret the comparative
experiments I made some years ago.

No doubt the company has changed the constituents of the product over its
life. After all the Coca Company's original recipe for Coke contained cocaine and
Fabriano Artistico has changes very recently.
