Oops! I was always toning *before* fixing. It seems toning after fixing
(or using KAuCl2 instead of the proper AuCl3 - or both) changes the
results considerably...

I've never tried diluting the gold toner to get a split-tone.
I usually tone by inspection after fixing the print in 2 successive
baths of 2% sodium thiosulphate for 1.5 minutes each. I typically print
on Crane's ecruwhite Kid Finish Stationery. The paper is warm and the
image goes a cool purple so I end up with cool shadows and warmer
highlights with this combination.
