You can certainly learn these processes by yourself if you have a
little patience. There are plenty of books around to help you. If you
are not far from NYC I am sure you could see a lot of excellent prints
in some of the better known museums, although you would probably need
an appointment ahead of time, etc.

Someone was supposed to work on an FAQ regarding these matters but I
guess the summer was too enjoyable...
