As an untutored newcomer to e-mail, I thought that the silly face meant
"Don't take this too seriously".

Evidently not, since two correspondents have now misunderstood the remark
-in different ways. Just for the record, let me explain:

When devising a new sensitizer formula, one of the objectives I set myself
(the "matter of honour") is to achieve a metal concentration high enough to
make double coating unnecessary for an adequate Dmax. This aim I jokingly
attributed to "abject laziness" on my part; but the underlying defence is
that good science should bestow economy of effort - leaving us all more
freedom to get on with the art.
