I endorse Peter Mumford's use of neat D19 as a high contrast developer -
also for negs to be printed by the iron-based alternative processes. Using
Kodak's Direct Duplicating Film Type SO-339 for making internegatives, I
dev for 8 to 10 minutes at 24 C with continuous agitation to zap up the
gamma, if the original camera negative was made for normal silver printing.
This effectively doubles a negative density range of 1, or so.

For 10x8 negs made in camera, I also favour TMax 400 developed in HC110 at
dilution A, for 5 to 7 minutes at 20 C with continuous agitation.
