Check some art supplies catalog, and you will find many prepared powdered
pigment. They are finely grounded as they are ready to be mixed and used
as watercolor.

If you really want to get into preparing your own pigment (from scratch),
a good book is "Colors from the Earth" by Anne Wall Thomas.

For a very good discussion / test charts of the properties of watercolor
paints (many brands included), check out "The Wilcox Guide to Watercolor
Paints" by Wilcox.
