First of all, we're really glad to have you here, and to have you
contributing. Don't be afraid to ask questions. There was a time when
each of us knew nothing - this is how we learn.

As to your question, the "gelatin-silver" prints which you refer to are
simply the same black and white prints you make at home using paper
from Kodak, Agfa, Ilford, Oriental, etc. They are one in the same.

It may be that at the time the prints were made there was better black
and white paper to be had - manufacturers have been steadily reducing the
amount of silver in their formulations. My guess is that whoever printed
the pictures was quite skilled too.
