kitty cameras

David Soemarko asked if anyone had built a kit camera, and I am
owning up to having built a 4x5 (but not Jay Bender's, an opposition's
kit). I am sorry that I can't remember the maker and the camera
currently resides 600kms away
from where I am just now (but I will check on it later this week if
you're all still curious then).
The camera looks great, but that's about it, I am afraid. Made of loverly
timber pieces which I lovingly sanded, Danish oiled and asembled - a serious 4x5
it aint, sadly. (It was always intended for pinhole use really, I must be
honest here.) It is impossible to lock anything tightly, or evenly, or
together and none of
the movements run anywhere near smoothly enough.
It's very frustrating. But it makes quite a good ornament, if you
like that sort of thing.
(I've even been to woodworking
classes with the specific intention of making cameras, which I did,
and am reasonably proficient in the area of woodwork, but then, pinhole
cameras are what I wanted to make.)
I had thought about making a kit 10x8 purchased from Jay Bender, feeling
convinced that his cameras would work well, (I found out about them,
from Jay himself
after I had bought this other one) but haven't got around to that
yet. i am still very keen to do this however when time permits.
Moral: beware of some kitty cameras.
