I have also had fairly good continuous-tone results from litho film, but
I like to tweak the contrast by adding litho developer (A + B) to some D-76.
As I recall, I get a nice range by adding one part
working-strength litho dev. to about four parts D-76. (I'm great at taking
notes but really bad at finding them later.) By "working-strength", I
mean you've already mixed the A and B solutions together. I buy no-name
brand litho film and A/B developer from Freestyle in L.A. They sell small
(10 sheets) packages of large-size (20" x 24") sheets, so you can afford to
experiment.
