The magazine Art-In-America publishes an "Annual Guide to Museums,
Galleries and Artists," a big fat directory that most probably has the
information you seek for the United States -- lists of alternative spaces,
museums, university galleries and artists as well, of course, as
commercial galleries, listing their "stables" and where each artist has
shown, among a great deal of other information that must surely be
compiled by computer...

It might make sense to check with A-i-A in case they have international
data, or would at least divulge their software......
