I'm treating the question as a serious one, and I too wonder how it
could be achieved. Could this be done with the adhesive masking
material that is used in glass sandblasting?

I don't follow the significance of "positive image" in the question,
though. AHAH! Yes, I do see the problem! "positive (raised) image
on a clear (unaffected) background"......

...you either build-up the area or you remove a heck of a lot of
background to make it appear clear. What type of rock? You
*could* conceivably apply a resist/mask to the design and then
blast the whole rock....maybe followed by several applications of
acid, to mimic natural weathering of the piece of granite.

"relatively flat piece of granite" doesn't suggest a large boulder.
