I would really like people to have the ability to post images - they are very helpful - a picture is worth a thousand words ... :) There are a few issues. Sending attachments through the list is not a good idea - for a few reasons. 1 - it puts a huge load on the mail server sending out a copy of the attachment to every subscriber (around 600) Its a terribly inefficient way of distributing an image. 2 - It assumes everyone on the list want ato get the attachment. It is still very inconvenient for a few people to deal with attachments 3 - it is a security risk to end users - 4- permanence - the list is archived - frequently people refer to a posting in the past - if it includes a reference to an image - it would be ideal for that image to be available as long as the archives are available. With these issues in mind I think the best approach would be to set up an image archive that allowed list members to post images. These images can be referred to (linked to) in postings. People then would have the choice of whether or not they wish to download a copy of the image. The archive would hopefully be relatively permanent. I will see if I can setup something tied to the list archive that would allow long term storage of images. I don't think this is within the our University's mandate. If anyone else has the ability to set up a relatively long term accessable image archive please feel free to step forward.
