I disagree - my experience with lists, and I'm several has been that 
text based lists using email are more cogent and offer more information 
that is relevant.  Web based lists open to anyone - even if for a brief 
moment tend to carry a lot more false information and hearsay that is 
irrelevant and often untrue.  Of course the same could be said about 
email lists, but at least with alt-photo and several other reservists I 
subscribe to, regular contributors tend to reign in the BS in short order.
