I think Selenium and/or sulfides such as Kodak's Sepia toner is a
great place to start.

Make several prints with good notes on the back, they dont have to be
exactly the same, in fact, if your notes are good, you might even make
a few lighter and some darker. Again, good notes will be really
helpful.

Read all the directions, follow the precautions, and mix according to
what is recommended on the package.

Don't try to do all of them all at once, Just pick one, like selenium,
and give it a try.

If you want to delve into it more, find a good book on toning, such as
Tim Rudmans Toning book.

If you have specific questions, just post and you will get answers.

Have fun!

I have heard, for example, that Selenium is very toxic, but we have some at the school I work at, which I could use.  We also have in our storage cabinet at school, Iron Blue Toner by Photographer's Formulary and Berg Rapid Sepia Toning.  Can you give any recommendations for a toning beginner about using these, or perhaps recommend better ones to start with?
