I was given a gallon of 3M gum bichromate about 17 years ago.
It is stored on a shelf in my basement, and still works just
fine (there is no telling how old it was before I got it). As
far as I could tell, there is no difference between the 3M gum
the gum available from Photographer's Formulary.
Now a question for Terry: you mentioned mixing powdered gum
with water 50/50. Did you mean by volume or weight? When I
mixed it 50/50 by volume, it yielded a very thick gum arabic
solution which was a lot more prone to flaking than the 3M
stuff. (It worked, but I had to be careful.) But the "500 ml
water to 500 gm gum arabic" you recommended would be by
weight. (I'll find out for myself if this recipe really makes
a liter, but I'll be surprised if it does.)
