I once had a friend who had a friend who rented a ballroom dress from a
fairly well reputed costume shop in the city. Before the evening was out she
was in the emergency room for a variety of ailments, including difficulty in
breathing and a terrible burning and itching skin rash. After much testing,
they found she had formaldehyde poisoning - story goes, the last person to
rent the dress was the family of a dead woman who wore it for a couple days
while on display. Urban Myth? who knows.

Also, of the gums I've done, I've treated about 25% with alum as a final
step. After a year, this batch (of 75% + 25%) don't seem noticifly different
to my eye re: fading, and some have been in my portfolio case while others
hanging on walls from P.E.I. to Toronto. I'll get back to you in 5 or 10
years if I don't give the rest alum, to let y'all know how they look.
