'Hectoring' and 'nannying' have very different connotations. But it would be
interesting if you would care to give examples of how we are inconvenienced by
both. Probably the school authorities who refused to allow ferricyanide because
it was 'cyanide' were nannying.
The trouble with 'hectoring' is that it still carries wider unpleasant
connotations that could confuse the issue.

As to gender bias, did you not notice the word 'scolding' in your Websters
definition ?
