Oftentimes the only reason for definitions is so that people can pass their time
arguing about them.

Bureaucrats love definitions. I know because I was one.

Those on the Photart list took up acres of space arguing about whether prints
that had been digitally produced were photographs.

They even suggested that such perversely produced objects should carry an
unclean label so that the purists would be able to abominate them.

This correspondence continued until there were a couple of succinct suggestions
which implied that the activity might be put on a par with that of Dorothy
Parker's canary.

Things have been quiet since.
