Recently, there has been correspondence on this list concerning newcomers
reluctance to ask questions from fear of put-downs or the dread "read the
archive" responses.
Put-downs are often in the eye of the beholder and are not really intended as
such. There is a solution the the other matter regarding "read the archive".
George Smyth has a web site on which he maintains an index of the archive.
By downloading this index, you can scan its contents at leisure to find the
subjects that interest you. This will aid in relieving the list membership from
plowing old ground over and over.
Smyth's index was 87 pages long as of 7/29/96 but this is considerably less than
2 1/2 years of archives.

After downloading the index, you can select the archive year and month that
interests you and retrieve just that part. I hope this helps the newbies get
comfortable with the list.
